It is the most used search engine in the world and its dominance has raised privacy concerns. The company was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They developed the first version of the search engine in their Stanford University dorm rooms and began receiving venture capital funding soon after. Their initial public offering (IPO) took place in 2004 and created billionaires for the founders as well as millions of new stockholders. The company’s name was inspired by the number googol, which is the number one followed by 100 zeros, a reference to the enormous amount of information on the web that Google is designed to organize.

In addition, the company operates two social media networks, YouTube and Google+, which have been integrated with many of its other products.
