FreeNAS

The FreeNAS project has announced the roadmap for version 0.8 of the free software NAS distribution.

As expected the next version of FreeNAS will be based on FreeBSD 8+, bringing with it a much improved version of the ZFS filesystem, but the roadmap also notes that the project will migrate away from the m0n0wall web interface, which is also used by pfSense and of course m0n0wall itself, to one built specifically for FreeNAS using the Django Python framework, which is well known for enabling developers to build high quality web applications quickly and securely.

Back in December, the project announced that iXsystems, a company which builds and sells custom server and storage solutions based around FreeBSD, would be assisting in the development of the next FreeNAS release. iXsystems is the same company that funds development of PC-BSD, a distribution of FreeBSD with enhancements for desktop users.
